ISBN: 3-540-36873-6
Language: English
Filetype: Adobe PDF
Filesize: 3.67 Mb

Written for: Students in Computer Science.

Keywords: Algebra, Formal Logic, Graphs, Linear Geometry, Mathematics for Computer Scientists, Sets

The two-volume textbook Comprehensive Mathematics for Computer Scientists, of which this is the first volume, is a self-contained comprehensive presentation of mathematics including sets, numbers, graphs, algebra, logic, grammars, machines, linear geometry, calculus, ODEs, and special themes such as neural networks, Fourier theory, wavelets, numerical issues, statistics, categories, and manifolds. The concept framework is streamlined but defining and proving virtually everything. The style implicitly follows the spirit of recent topos-oriented theoretical computer science. Despite the theoretical soundness, the material stresses a large number of core computer science subjects, such as, for example, a discussion of floating point arithmetic, Backus-Naur normal forms, L-systems, Chomsky hierarchies, algorithms for data encoding, e.g., the Reed-Solomon code. The numerous course examples are motivated by computer science and bear a generic scientific meaning.

For the second edition the entire text has been carefully reread, and many examples have been added, as well as illustrations and explications to statements and proofs which were exposed in a too shorthand style. This makes the book more comfortable to handle for instructors as well as for students.

Keywords:

Although it is critical in today’s world that students who take automata theory and logic courses retain what they have learned and understand how to use their knowledge, many textbooks typically emphasize automata theory only, not logic, thus losing a valuable opportunity to tie these subjects together and reinforce learning. This textbook uses interactive tools throughout, such as simple BDD and SAT tools. By providing a blend of theory and practical applications the material is presented as both inviting and current. Key concepts are illustrated in multiple domains so that information is reinforced and students can begin to tie theory and logic together.

Keywords: CAD, CAGD, Computer Graphics, Geometric Modelling, Mathematics for Computer Graphics

Possibly the most comprehensive overview of computer graphics as seen in the context of geometric modelling, this two volume work covers implementation and theory in a thorough and systematic fashion. Computer Graphics and Geometric Modelling: Mathematics, contains the mathematical background needed for the geometric modeling topics in computer graphics covered in the first volume. This volume begins with material from linear algebra and a discussion of the transformations in affine & projective geometry, followed by topics from advanced calculus & chapters on general topology, combinatorial topology, algebraic topology, differential topology, differential geometry, and finally algebraic geometry. Two important goals throughout were to explain the material thoroughly, and to make it self-contained. This volume by itself would make a good mathematics reference book, in particular for practitioners in the field of geometric modelling. Due to its broad coverage and emphasis on explanation it could be used as a text for introductory mathematics courses on some of the covered topics, such as topology (general, combinatorial, algebraic, and differential) and geometry (differential & algebraic).

Information Systems Reengineering and Integration

00162902890tr3.jpg

Name: Information Systems Reengineering and Integration (2nd ed)
Series:
Volume package:
Author: Joseph Fong
Publisher: Springer
Year: 2006
Volume: XIV
Pages: 368
Illustrations:
ISBN: 978-1-84628-382-6
Language: English
Filetype: Adobe PDF
Filesize: 3.47 Mb

Written for: Undergraduates/graduates of Information Systems and Knowledge Engineering.

Keywords:

The strategic importance of information systems is now widely accepted, and over the last three decades these systems have received considerable investment. Systems have evolved from file systems, through database systems, to the emergence of Management Information Systems (MIS) and – more recently – Executive Information Systems (EIS). With the advent of each new form of the technology there has been a need to redesign and re-implement existing systems. Hence the dramatic increase in the amount of resources put into the area of reengineering.

Reengineering involves the re-design of an existing Information System, whilst utilising as much of the existing system as possible. This text takes a practical approach to re-engineering existing systems and looks at data integration, and focuses on proven methods and tools for:

* the conversion of hierarchical or network database systems into relational database technology, or from relational to object-oriented and XML databases
* the integration of database systems and expert systems to produce MIS and EIS systems

Taking a very practical approach, the book describes in detail database conversion techniques, reverse engineering and forward engineering, and re-engineering methodology for information systems, offering a systematic software engineering approach for reusing existing database systems built with "old" technology, Many examples, illustrations and case studies are used, making the methodology easy to follow, and a CD is included containing solutions to problems.

This book is used for a text book of undergraduate and first year graduate students, and also for a reference book of computer professionals.

Language: English
Filetype: Adobe PDF
Filesize: 2.42 Mb

Written for: Graduate and senior undergraduate students in electronic engineering (circuit testing, system testing and working with analog, digital and mixed-signal engineering; academics teaching circuits and systems and/or electronic engineering to either graduates or undergraduates; libraries.

Keywords: HDL, Hardware Description Language, Integrated Circuits, MATLAB®, Mixed-signal Circuits, SOC, Spice, System-on-a-chip, Test Engineering, VLSI, Verilog®

Nearly sixty years ago, the first successful demonstration of the transistor proved to be the herald of a new era of microelectronics. The ever-increasing complexity and functional speed of microelectronic circuits now containing tens of millions of transistors demand appropriate and rigorous test engineering activities during development and production. Test engineering must also be more closely interwoven with microelectronic design. An understanding of circuit test engineering is vital to any student desiring a career involving any stage in the design or manufacture of integrated circuits.

Taking a three-pronged approach – dealing with test engineering from traditional-test, design and manufacturing view-points – Integrated Circuit Test Engineering encapsulates the subject as it stands today. After an introduction covering background from basic testing rules to trends in technology, the reader learns about:

• fabrication processes;
• a diverse and complete range of detailed tests and procedures calculated to teach you all the tests you will require and how to choose which one(s) to use;
• how to design for testability;
• fault simulation;
• automatic test equipment and
• the economics of testing.

From a practical perspective, the text includes:
• A range of worked examples and exercises together with well-organized references and bibliography to aid further enquiry.
• An introduction to various software such as MATLAB® and Spice explaining their use in testing together with that of IEEE-standard hardware-description languages Verilog®-HDL and VHDL.
• A series of experiments based on material which can be freely downloaded from springeronline.com instructing you in the construction of a hardware test arrangement for MS Windows PCs (functionality, schematic and printed-circuit-board layout)with Visual Basic programs to drive the experiments.

Integrated Circuit Test Engineering provides a thorough-going and illuminating introduction to test engineering in analogue, digital and mixed-signal integrated circuits. This text is a valuable practical learning tool for advanced undergraduate and graduate electronic engineering students, an excellent teaching resource for their tutors and a useful guide for the practising electronic engineer.
